My Current (Quarantine) Skincare Favorites

When it comes to skincare, I love switching up products, testing new formulas and playing around with when and how often I use them. With my skin in one of the best conditions it has been in years, I wanted to share with you my current beloved skincare items.

My everyday skincare routine has always consisted of the simple, must-haves: a cleanser, moisturizer and eye-cream. This hasn’t changed- I still use these items, but I have discovered some amazing finds here in California. My current facial cleanser, which I use in the mornings (after my workout) and at night is the Honest Gentle Gel Cleanser. I already used up one bottle a few weeks ago and grabbed a new one during my recent Target run. It’s so gentle and has a very slight, elegant scent. I love that it doesn’t have any harsh chemicals in it and I can really feel that on my skin. It’s never dry and tight after I wash it, but simply refreshed.

My daily moisturizer has been the Weleda Skin Food Light for almost a year now and I stil absolutely love it. I use it every day as my main moisturizer and almost all evenings. I have also been using some other moisturizers with it too though. Some days I use the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo, when I feel like my skin isn’t as even as I would like it to be. Pretty much every morning now as well, I apply an SPF to my skin. This is because we now live in California, where we are fortunate enough to have sunshine almost every single day and even if I don’t go out of the house much during the day, most days I go and spend some time in our balcony and want to protect my skin from sun damage. I have been using the Neutrogena oil-free moisture SPF 35 and have been liking it so far, but I think once I’m finished with it I may look for something a little bit more lightweight.

As for eye-cream- I have still been loving my Kiehl’s Youth Dose Eye Treatment. I like it since it’s creamy but doesn’t tug at my skin and I really like the ritual of treating the skin around my eyes a little bit special.

Now onto the newbies!

There has been a handful of products I have incorporated into my daily or weekly routine that I have absolutely fallen in love with. I don’t know if its the sun, the increased amount of water I have been drinking due to the heat or this skincare routine, but my skin has been super happy and healthy recently. So, even though I’m not going to claim how these products are the best things out there (although I think they are pretty amazing if you ask me), they are definitely doing something right for my skin along with my lifestyle changes.

The first thing I changed back in December and that is- Hyaluronic acid. I’ve added a hyaluronic acid serum to my skincare routine as I wanted something to hydrate my skin for the long-run from within and not just while I’m wearing moisturizer. I bought the Ordinary HA 2%+B5 serum and I’ve already used up 2 bottles of it before this one. I haven’t been using it as much nowadays as I did in the winter (I used to use it twice a day) purely because I don’t think my skin needs it right now. It may be all the other products that I’m using or the weather here, but my skin has been soft, moisturised and glowy even with me using this product only twice or 3 times a week. Every time I use it though, I feel like my skin gets a lovely dose of hydration and it’s a nice treatment to do after I do a chemical peel.

That brings me onto my second Ordinary product that I have been loving and that is the Ordinary AHA 30% BHA 2% peeling solution. Now, this was very new to me as I had only had chemical peels during facials, but I loved the idea of doing one at home. Having read the reviews, I knew I should expect some tingling on my skin and I definitely did, but when I wash off the peel after 10 minutes (max application time), my skin always feels refreshed, clean and has a natural dewy look to it without being oily. I use this either once or twice a week- normally on Sundays and Wednesdays!

Now, on the other days that I am not using the chemical peel, I use a retinol cream! I never used retinol before, but after doing copious amounts of research on it and why we need it, I decided to buy one myself. Retinol is a type of retinoid, the family of chemical compounds related to vitamin A. Other retinoids include: retinoic acid (also known as tretinoin), retinyl palmitate, and retinaldehyde, all of which can be found in skincare products.  When retinol is applied to the skin, our body’s enzymes convert the retinol into retinoic acid, the active form of the vitamin, which works to increase cell turnover, stimulate collagen and elastin production, fade hyperpigmentation, and help skin stay hydrated and glowing without irritation. Apparently, it can treat and prevent everything from stubborn cystic acne and eczema to sun-induced wrinkles and dark spots.

At first, I was thinking of buying a pure retinol serum, but having read about the possibilities of overdoing it at the beginning, I decided to pick up a moisturizer that contains retinol alongside other ingredients to moisturize the skin. So, I picked up the Origins Plantscription Retinol Night Moisturizer. I actually got it at a TKMAXX and after using it for about two months now, I love it! My skin definitely feels a lot more soft and less prone to blemishes since I’ve started to use it. I normally apply this after I cleanse my face and apply eye-cream. I apply it all over my skin and neck (avoiding my eyes) and sometimes follow up with the Skin food moisturizer. Sometimes, if my skin isn’t feeling particularly dry- I will finish off my skincare without the additional moisturizer.

If you decide to add a retinol to your routine as well, make sure you do some research before and don’t over-do it with the potency or the frequency you use it. I have heard multiple stories of how people’s skin gets worse before it gets better when using strong retinols because it’s working in overdrive. That’s partly why I got a moisturizer with retinol- because I didn’t want to overdo it. Also, make sure you wear SPF every day if you use a retinol as your skin is a lot more sensitive and susceptible to sun damage!

Just as I’ve fallen in love with retinol, I have fallen in love with Vitamin C. Not just in my diet (check out my Nutrition 101:Vitamin C post here), but also for my skin. As I started to experiment with the before mentioned skincare products, I noticed I didn’t use any Vitamin C on my face. Vitamin C is essential for many cellular and skin functions, including maintaining skin strength and integrity, wound healing and free radical and UV protection. It’s a potent antioxidant, meaning it neutralizes free radicals in the skin, which are formed from things like the sun, pollution and stress and can lead to premature ageing and skin cancer. Vitamin C also boosts collagen production and reverses cell damage, which helps keep the skin firmer and even helps fade and prevent brown spots and pigmentation. Anything that will keep my skin youthful, healthy and dewy is a yes from me.

I have been giving the Elizabeth Arden Vitamin C Ceramide Capsules Radiance Renewal Serum a go for almost a month now and love them. I bought the 30-capsule container and only have a few left, so will be ordering some more soon, unless I find a new one to try out.  I decided to get these, since the reviews were very good and I loved the fact that the serum was individually dosed- perfect for travel I’ve been loving it so far and use it every morning after cleansing my face in the shower, before all of my moisturizers.

If you have some must-have skincare products that you would highly recommend I try out, please share them with me in the comments or message me on Instagram! I would love to hear your thoughts and any recommendations.
