I thought I was going to tell this story in my Planning a Wedding in 3 Months series post on how to pick your wedding dress, but when I started writing up the story of how I chose my dress, I decided to dedicate a whole post just to it.
So, if you’re interested in finding out how I chose my wedding dress, then keep reading and I hope you enjoy 🙂
The story of me choosing my wedding dress is very quick and simple… I fell in love with the 3rd dress I tried on!
Whilst we were in Vilnius during Easter holidays, Jonas and I had decided I should try on some dresses just in case we decide to have our wedding in 2019 instead of 2020 (which we were considering at the time). So, on a Monday morning in April, I took my mom and we went to a bridal salon to try on some dresses just so that I know what I like, what looks good on me and what my mom agrees would be a good silhouette for me to continue trying on in my own time.
We went into the salon both having a specific dress style in mind, which we had discussed and pictured me wearing, but never knew what it would look like on. I had mentioned to the lady at the salon that I wanted a simple, off-the-shoulder gown that wasn’t too out there, but still very elegant and bridal. She pulled 3 dresses for me to try on- one a very detailed, beaded top dress (not off the shoulder, but just to see what I think), one sweetheart a-line dress with detachable off-the-shoulder sleeves and third- a simple, ivory, off-the-shoulder ballgown with a gorgeous long train.
The first two dresses really were not my style. The first did not suit my shape at all and definitely was not what I was looking for. The second, was a bit closer to what I wanted, but still seemed to intricate and too glamorous for me.
When I saw the third one on the hanger, both my mom and I thought it was too simple and it would be another disappointment…
But when we put it on….
Something inside me changed… I was wearing the dress of my dreams!
I felt so beautiful and so special. I wanted to let out so many emotions but had to contain them as we had planned only to look at the dresses and not buy anything…. Trying to hide feelings from the salon staff, I could see my mom also approving of the dress and both of us smiling from ear to ear. There was something missing though, as the dress had a tiny little bow on the waist, so we tried on a few belt options that would accentuate my waist a bit more but also add a bit of sparkle to the dress.
And that was it… although unplanned, we ordered the dress and picked the belt I wanted for the big day right there and then and left the salon grinning from ear to ear. I was super happy but also kept wondering if I decided too fast… especially if we were going to wait another year, but my mom kept reassuring me that this was THE dress & that I would most likely go to other salons and keep comparing it to this one. Which is true.
I was lucky to have ordered it on the day I did as well, as we ended up having our wedding just 3 months later which was a very tight deadline to get the dress made and altered in time- but we did it!
I could not love my dress more and when I look back at the pictures of it from my fittings and the big day, I fall in love with it more and more each time. Jonas also absolutely loves the dress- he said it has to be the most beautiful dress he has seen. We both love how simple, elegant and royal it is!
After the big day, I had the dress professionally cleaned and any tiny tears fixed. It is now proudly stored away in my parent’s house as I never plan to part with it. I hope one day to either use the fabric for something else or, if I am lucky and have a little girl, give it to her.
I hope everyone reading this finds this story interesting. Especially for all the brides-to-be. I really hope and wish for you to find THE dress that you absolutely fall in love with and cannot see wearing anything else on the big day!
