Now, everyone seems to have some kind of habit in their life. Whether its waking up and excersizing, reading a book in the evening before bed, calling your loved ones or maybe – making the same exact meal for 3 weeks straight? Well that’s the habit I have formed recently…. guilty!
A couple of weeks ago I was playing around with my Nutri Ninja (best Christmas present ever!) and made up a healthy chocolate smoothie! I wanted to make something decadent, sweet, rich, thick and yet – nutritiously valuable. Something that will make you feel good, energized, give you the carbs, proteins and healthy fats you need to stay awake and functioning the whole morning! Before I mastered this recipe I would always have a breakfast and then reach for a snack around 10 A.M. Now I find myself feeling sustained and full up until lunch time… which says a lot as my breakfast is typically around 7 A.M.!
For the past 3 weeks I have been having this smoothie for breakfast pretty much every week day (weekends are spent with my boyfriend so I make something more interesting and intricate). I love this smoothie! Something perfect if you are looking for a nice treat that will keep you energized and curb your sweet cravings. Also, a perfect way of getting back into smoothies if you were used to more filling breakfasts over the colder months.
not the pretties of photos, I know – but trust me, this smoothie is worth a try!
Ingredients: makes 1 smoothie
- 1 ripe banana (frozen)
- 1 cup of almond milk
- 1 tbsp of raw Cacao powder
- 1 tbsp of Cocoa powder
- 1 tbsp of Chia seeds
- 1.5 tbsp of ground Flax seeds
- 1/4 tbsp Maca powder
- 1 tbsp pure Maple syrup
- 1 tbsp natural, unsweetened peanut butter
- handful of Cacao nibs (for topping)
- Throw all of the ingredients into a blender and blend – easy as that!
- I top mine off with some Cacao nibs for some added crunchy texture.
As I mentioned – this smoothie has the perfect combination of nutrient dense foods. You have your potassium and carb rich banana, the healthy protein and fats from the peanut butter, fiber and healthy fats from the chia and flax seeds. Maca powder is rich in Vitamins B,C and E, iron, calcium, zinc & magnesium as well as great for maintaining hormone levels. Raw cacao powder and cacao nibs are rich in antioxidants – I add the cocoa powder for an extra chocolate-y taste but you can omit it if you like. If you would like some extra protein in your diet – feel free to add protein powder – I would recommend Vanilla or Chocolate flavor.
I hope you enjoyed my first recipe post! Let me know if you try this smoothie and keep your eyes peeled for more smoothie creations in the future 🙂
